Using RightAnswer’s proven technology platform, the ReproAnswer™ System bridges the gap, identified by the CDC, between healthcare providers and the expert teratogen information needed to support better decisions for medication use in pregnancy, all to reduce premature births and birth defects.

Research and development of the ReproAnswer™ System was funded by Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with input from experts at the University of Washington, including the expertise of those responsible for creating and maintaining the TERIS database.

Integrating authoritative information from multiple gold-standard sources, the ReproAnswer™ System supports healthcare providers as they assess medication risk with women of child-bearing age. These developmental/reproductive toxicity databases also provide teratogenic risk information on prescription and over-the-counter medications, substance use, maternal infections and vaccines (such as coronavirus), and environmental and workplace exposures (such as ethylene oxide).

For most medications the safety or risk profile is either unknown or very difficult to find, and it is difficult for healthcare providers and women to weigh the risks and benefits of treatment options during pregnancy and lactation.

This data source is a compilation of scientific reviews on the teratogenic effects of more than 3700 drugs, chemicals and other physical and biological agents. The Catalog includes many references from the Japanese as well as American and European literature. Developed by Dr. Thomas H. Shepard and co-authored by Janine E. Polifka, Ph.D.

TERIS

Teratogen Information System – University of Washington
TERIS is a computerized database designed to assist physicians or other healthcare professionals in assessing the risks of possible teratogenic exposures in pregnant women. The database consists of a series of agent summaries, each of which is based on a thorough review of published clinical and experimental literature. Summaries may be accessed using either generic names or domestic or foreign proprietary names. Each summary includes a risk assessment derived by consensus of an advisory board comprised of nationally recognized authorities in clinical teratology.
