The 2016 theme is Inspiring Progress and Prosperity: Michigan Entrepreneurs. Michigan Celebrates Small Business, the sponsoring organization, was looking for companies that are innovative in their fields or business practices, are achieving growth and success, and will have a breakout year in 2016.
Nominees must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for the award:
- Be a privately held commercial enterprise and has not received the award in the past
- Be past the startup stage and facing issues of growth, not survival
- Be headquartered in Michigan
- Demonstrate the intent and capacity to grow based on employee or sales growth, exhibit a sustainable competitive advantage and other notable successes
- Employ 6-99 full-time equivalent W2 employees which includes the owner
- Have between $750,000 and $50M in annual revenue OR working capital from investors or grants
Award recipients are selected by a panel of judges based on past growth and projected success as well as special strengths like innovative products or business practices, use of technology, or community involvement. The program is an opportunity to celebrate the success of small business in Michigan and is the premier award for entrepreneurs and small business leaders.
